Steps to Become a Certified Instructor

 Step 1: Obtain a Current AHA BLS Provider Certification

 Before attending the Instructor Course, candidates must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
     
  • Hold a current American Heart Association BLS Provider card
    (AHA only – no other certifications accepted)
     
  • Complete the BLS Instructor Essentials Online Course
     
    • Certificate of Completion must be presented on Day 1
       
  • Be accepted by an authorized AHA Training Center
     
    • Enrollment in a TEACH BLS Instructor Course satisfies this requirement
       

👉 If you do not currently hold a valid AHA BLS Provider card, we can assist you with completing the required provider course prior to the Instructor training.


 

Step 2: Complete the Online Instructor Essentials Course


After verifying your BLS Provider status, candidates must complete the AHA Instructor Essentials course for the discipline they intend to teach.

  • Completed online at your own pace
     
  • Covers AHA teaching philosophy, course structure, and instructor responsibilities
     
  • Required prior to attending in-person instructor training
     

Access to the Instructor Essentials course is provided after enrollment.

BLS Essentials Course

Step 3: Attend In-Person Instructor Training

 Once all prerequisites and online coursework are completed, candidates attend in-person instructor training.

  • Two training days
     
  • Approximately six hours per day
     
  • 12 total hours of in-person instruction
     

In-person training includes:

  • Teaching demonstrations
     
  • Skills practice and evaluation
     
  • Instructor role-play scenarios
     
  • Classroom setup and course flow
     
  • Competency assessment
     

All required skills and evaluations are completed live and in person.


 

Step 4: Complete Instructor Evaluation & Program Requirements


During the in-person sessions, candidates will:

  • Demonstrate teaching ability
     
  • Perform required skills accurately
     
  • Show understanding of course flow and standards
     
  • Complete all program requirements for instructor eligibility
     

Successful completion allows candidates to move forward as certified instructors.

This foundational package is ideal for individuals who want to teach American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) courses.

  • Pediatric First Aid & CPR Instructor authorization

 Group/Multiple Instructor Discount:
If an organization is certifying more than one instructor in the same session, each additional instructor is $600 (no need to purchase additional packages; materials can be shared).

Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials; do not represent income to the AHA.

The American Heart Association is authorized to offer AMA Credit Designation Statement to Physicians, AAPA Credit Acceptance Statement to Physician Assistants, AANP Credit Acceptance Statement to Nurse Practitioners, ANCC Credit Designation to Nurses, ACPE Credit Designation Statement to Pharmacists, and Continuing Education Accreditation to Emergency Medical Services for the BLS Instructor Essentials. Credits are claimed on the AHA website but there are time limits of 30 days to 6 months depending on accrediting agency.
